Ford Recalls SUVs Over Brake Failure Risk – What Owners Need to Know

Ford Motor Company has issued a significant recall affecting nearly 274,000 SUVs in the United States. The recall targets specific 2022–2024 models of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator due to a potential brake system defect that could increase the risk of a crash.

Overview of the Recall

The issue stems from a potential installation defect where the front brake lines may come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. This contact can cause friction, potentially leading to a brake fluid leak and, consequently, a loss of braking capability. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified this as a significant safety concern, as it can result in increased stopping distances and a higher risk of accidents.

Affected Vehicles

The recall encompasses 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators manufactured between April 15, 2021, and November 20, 2024. Ford estimates that approximately 1% of these vehicles may have the defect. As of April 17, the company had received 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks but no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Signs of the Issue

Drivers of affected vehicles may notice an increase in brake pedal travel, meaning they would need to press the pedal further down to engage the brakes effectively. Additionally, a leaking brake line will cause the brake fluid level to decrease over time, which could trigger the red brake warning light on the dashboard. These symptoms indicate a potential loss of brake function and should be addressed immediately.

Remedy and Next Steps

Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake lines of impacted vehicles and replace them or the air cleaner outlet pipe if necessary, free of charge. Dealer notifications began on May 14, 2025, and owner letters are scheduled to be mailed between May 26 and May 30. In the meantime, drivers can confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall by visiting the NHTSA website or using Ford’s recall lookup tool. The company's reference number for this recall is 25S47.

Importance of Addressing Recalls

Vehicle recalls are critical for ensuring driver and passenger safety. Ignoring recall notices can lead to serious accidents and injuries. It's essential for vehicle owners to stay informed about recalls and take prompt action to address any identified issues.

Conclusion

Ford's proactive approach in addressing this brake system defect demonstrates the company's commitment to safety. Vehicle owners affected by this recall should take immediate steps to have their vehicles inspected and repaired to prevent potential accidents. Staying informed and responsive to recall notices is vital for maintaining vehicle safety and performance.
